Makeup- Post #3 (due 2/28)

U.S. Decides to Release Detainee at Guantanamo

This article told about the Justice Department deciding to release a detainee from Guantanamo Bay. The detainee was a doctor in which the Bush administration had once claimed, had taken part in an anthrax program of Al Qaeda. The government had stop accusations pertaining to the anthrax claim, but continued to hold the doctor claiming he had ties and had met with Osama Bin Laden. The Obama administration decided to let him go, due to the detainee and representatives were preparing a federal hearing in a habeas corpus case, in which the detainee was challenging his imprisonment. The lawyer for the detainee said, "that under an agreement the court case could be reopened if his client objected to the conditions of his release." Also going on to say, "the meetings with Mr. Bin Laden had been chance encounters and that the Justice Department decision had vindicated his client. As a doctor, there was no basis under international law for the U.S. government to hold him."
OK Mr. Obama, first of all, why are we closing down Guantanamo Bay? I think that is ridiculous. Secondly, why is every terrorist that has been captured before, especially those from the Bush administration being released? If you have something against Bush, don't take it out on the rest of this Country, by turning all these people loose. They are in there for a reason. I am sure they weren't just picked out of the crowd. Obama has done some pretty stupid things since he has been in office. I'm not trying to knock Obama, everyone president has and will continue to do wrong, but the whole "We Can Change" or whatever it was, doesn't mean lets turn a bunch of terrorist out and shut down the prison. Get Real!

Breast Cancer Awareness

The article I read for this week is found on the Feminist Majority Foundation website. It is titled 'Representative Wasserman Schultz Launches Breast Cancer Prevention Bill.' The article was about Representative Wasserman overcoming her battle with breast cancer and since her battle she is proposing a bill. Called the Education and Awareness Requires Learning Young Act ( EARLY Act). The article goes on to say how important it is to become aware of breast cancer detection at an early age. That women from all ethnic and cultural backgrounds are able to get breast cancer. She proposed that, "the Centers for Disease Control to develop and implement a national education campaign to increase awareness of the threats posed by breast cancer in young women". Representative Wasserman in a different press release than the information above came from also went on to say that, "While I certainly was fortunate enough to have access to good health care, I didn't find my tumor early because of luck. I found my tumor early because of knowledge and awareness. I knew that I should perform breast self-exams, and I was aware of what my body was supposed to feel like. We need to ensure that every young woman in America can rely on more than luck. Their survival depends on it."
OK, in my opinion every lady should have to take a class or something to learn about breast cancer, how to become aware of it, how to do self-exams, and what they should do if a lump or tumor occurs. I come from a long line of females that have survived breast cancer, and I can say that many of them did survive thanks to early detection. Just last year both my mom and grandmother were diagnosed with breast cancer, and both had the lumps removed, took radiation and are still with me today. I think this is a good proposal of this bill and it is worth the time, effort, and money.

Same Sex Bill Fails in NM

Domestic Partnership Bill Fails in NM State Legislature

My article this week was about a bill that would have allowed same sex couples access to domestic partnership in New Mexico failed to pass in the state Senate last week. 10 Democrats and all of the Republicans voted against the bill. It failed 17 to 25. The biill would have provided same sex couples with legal rights and benefits of marriage under state law. The New Mexico governor Bill Richardson told the Sante Fe New Mexican that "I'm disappointed by the Senate's actions today in defeating what is fundamentally an issue of civil rights and equality."

Ok well, I have a problem with this. In my opinion it is not right for same sex marriages to occur. It is against my religion and the way I was raised. I understand that people want to be happy and you can't pick who you fall in love with and so on. But In the bible, it says that marriage is supposed to be between a man and a woman. I just cant even cope with the governor saying he was disappointed because they wouldn't pass this bill. Does the Governor realize what he is saying. Yeah, people do whatever they want. But it isn't right. I don't expect to be judged by this because I have family who prefer the same sex, but they know how I feel. I don't accept it for them, so I won't accept it for anyone else. I might be narrow minded or just plain old fashioned, but that's how I was brought up and that is still what I believe.
